About

I grew up in Brookline, the youngest of four, in a house that was always in some state of improvement. My mother raised us mostly on her own after my father died, and she had an instinct for what a space could become — we moved often, and each time, we set to work.

After high school I spent three years in Italy, studying art formally and doing carpentry to pay for it. Those two things turned out to be the same thing. I came back with a Master's in Fine Arts and a respect for proportion and material that I've carried into every project since.

That was over 25 years ago. I settled in Brookline with my wife, started Lockwood Carpentry, and have been at it ever since. The scope has been everything: whole-house renovations, additions, kitchens, bathrooms, finish work, cladding, property development. Foundations to finish.

The art background shapes how I work with clients. I think about proportion, light, and architectural character — things that are hard to spec but easy to see when they're right. I work closely with architects when there are architects, and directly with homeowners when there aren't.

I'm always curious about the next project. If you have a space you're thinking about, I'd like to hear about it.
